In 1971, Theodore Fujita developed a classification for tornadoes known as the F-scale. This system is based on how much damage is caused by the winds associated with tornadoes. However, a tornado's actual ground-level wind speed is pretty much unknown. Most tornadoes are F0 to F1. The rest are mainly F2 or F3. Only one percent are F4 or F5.

• Turn of any elictricity
• Assume the tornado position (crouch tight and cover your head with your arms)

When conditions are severe, a thunderstorm or tornado watch will be issued. You should stay informed about the thunderstorm by listening to NOAA weather radio, commercial radio, and television for the warnings and tornado watches.

These destructive forces of nature are found most frequently in the united states. An average of 800 tornadoes are reported nationwide. Tornadoes often produce large hail and strong winds.

WEAK TORNADOES:

• 69% of all tornadoes
  
• lifetime: 1-10+ minutes
• winds less than 110 mph
  
• 5% (or less) of tornado deaths

STRONG TORNADOES:

• 29% of all tornadoes
• lasts for 20 minutes or longer
• winds 110-205 mph
• at least 30% of all tornado deaths

VIOLENT TORNADOES:

• 2% of all tornadoes
• life time can be for an hour or more
• 70% of all tornado deaths
